PAD Stories

"This time, with a PAD, I did not receive any treatments that I did not want. They were very respectful.  I really felt like the hospital took better care of me because I had my PAD. In fact, I think it's the best care that I've ever received.” Click for more...

Should PADs be able to be able to be changed or revoked in a crisis?  On the one hand, if they can be revoked, that sort of defeats the purpose of having a PAD in the first place since whatever you’d say you wanted in a crisis would be the preference doctors would either respect or not.  On the other hand, what if something legitimately changed since the time you wrote the PAD (e.g., new medication) and you never had a chance or got around to write a new one?  Is there a good answer to this?

there's no point to having a PAD that you can change while you're in crisis and presumably incompentent since the PAD wouldn't have gone into effect unless you were incompetent. The whole idea is to have rational plans over-ride irrational ones you might make while you were incompetent.

Right, but what if your PAD is kind of old, and you've changed your mind since then but haven't changed it? Then you might want something different for a good reason, but you wouldn't be able to get it.

But really if you have to use your PAD, you're going to be pretty out of it. I mean, that's what PADs are for- when you're out of it. SO at that time, you wouldn't be able to tell people what you really wanted anyway. What if you told them something dumb, like that you really didn't mean that you wanted medicine but that you needed vitamin water? You don't want them to listen to that instead of what you wrote down.
